Megan Rose Evans
Megan’s work explores the idea behind self-presentation and the decisions people make to change or alter their own appearance. The idea of beauty and procedures that people may choose to pursue is a strong element in her work, as she discusses and shows the violence that this can create instead of initially making someone more ‘beautiful’ in their own eyes.
Although her work typically looks as though they are painted, or drawn using pastels, she uses only 100% make-up in most of her pieces, although she does add areas of pastels within her work to add detail and depth to them. The make up used ranges from liquid foundation, eyeliners and also different shades of lipstick to gain a variety in shades and tones, to give a somewhat realistic approach to her images. This material isn’t typically seen as an artistic medium, yet is used day to day by many in an artistic manner to cover and enhance people’s faces to make them initially someone they may not actually be.
By using the make-up this allows Megan to show how something known to be used to make people ‘beautiful’ and more ‘attractive’ can be used in an apposing affect to create violent and somewhat disturbing images of faces and facial features that have received surgery of some kind.
